SV Darmstadt 98 coach Dirk Schuster has asked for his contract to be terminated by the club amid interest from Bundesliga rivals FC Augsburg.
Die Fuggerstadter are believed to be seeking a replacement for Markus Weinzierl, who is expected to take over the reins at FC Schalke 04.
Schuster returned Die Lilien to the German top flight after a 33-year absence last season as they won back-to-back promotions, having come up from the third division.
But just nine days after securing the club’s top-flight status for the 2016/17 campaign, the 48-year-old has requested to be released from his deal at Merck-Stadion am Bollenfalltor, which runs until 2018.
Darmstadt chairman Klaus Rudiger Fritsch confirmed they will hold discussions with Schuster to find the best way forward for both parties.
“The club must, in the light of the contract period until 2018, now deal with the release request. This we will do in peace and with due seriousness,” Fritsch said in a statement.
