Go Ahead Eagles return to the Eredivisie

Go Ahead Eagles will return to the Eredivisie at the first time of asking after celebrating an unlikely promotion in the play-off finals.

The Dutch side finished fifth in the Eerste Divisie standings after winning seven of their last eight games in the campaign, and beat now relegated top-flight side De Graafschap 5-2 over a two-legged final.

Now, confusion surrounds who will join Go Ahead Eagles and Sparta Rotterdam in the league next season.

De Gaafschaap are hoping for Willem II to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg loss to NAC Breda in order to survive the drop.

In a chain on unlikely events, Superboeren will escape relegation in controversial fashion, replacing FC Twente who have been relegated after breaching financial fair play rules.

Twente have appealed the verdict after the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) released the following statement.

“The Dutch professional players’ council has two weeks to consider the proposal and issue a non-binding opinion before the decision is finalised.”
