Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy has revealed he considered departing the Emirates Stadium during the transfer window after being pushed down the pecking order by Hector Bellerin.
The Spaniard's emergence was one of the high points for the Gunners last season following an injury to the then first-choice Debuchy and Bellerin has now seemingly cemented his place in the starting line-up after starting in the 1-0 Community Shield win against Chelsea.
The Frenchman admits his ousting by the youngster has been hard to take but says he is now looking to fight for his place after considering his options in the off-season.
"It is difficult," he told L’Equipe. "Even if I had not played a lot last season, in my head I would return to start after my recovery. But, at the Community Shield against Chelsea, Wenger chose him, Bellerin.
"It was a surprise and a disappointment. Let’s say it crossed my mind (leaving). But I want to be at Arsenal and to take my place."
