Thomas Tuchel is delighted with the signing of highly rated youngster Ousmane Dembele, claiming that the player has a lot to look forward to at Borussia Dortmund.
The 19-year-old caught the eye of several top European clubs during his excellent season at Stade Rennes where he bagged an astonishing 15 goals – and assisted in 5 more – in only 22 appearances, helping his club to end the season in a respectable 8th position.
Whether or not the player was going to leave his club was not as pertinent a question as who he was leaving the club for.
Ultimately the young forward chose the Bundesliga runners-up, much to the delight of Dortmund manager Tuchel.
“I’m over the moon with the signing of Dembele and I can’t wait to work with him,” Tuchel told media at the pre-match press conference ahead of the season finale against 1. FC Köln.
“We worked very hard to get him and we’re very excited about his arrival,” the coach added.
“Youngsters know how things work here: great fans, packed stadia and a lot of attention – but Dembele’s ready to play in the Bundesliga. He’s a technically gifted player and a real goal threat.”
The player himself also expressed excitement at joining the German club, saying that it was a combination of his countryman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Tuchel who convinced him to choose Dortmund over other suitors.
“I talked to Aubameyang on the phone,” Dembele said.
“He told me BVB is a great club, and then I came here and saw the club’s great infrastructure for myself. The conditions are amazing, that’s why I decided to play here.
“The coach was very important for me, because I like what he has planned for the team, and I like that this includes young players.
“He told me that if I work hard, I’ll get to play. He was very convincing and contributed to my decision.”
