Ayeyawady see off Lao Toyota

Ayeyawady United defeated Lao Toyota 3-2 in Group H of the AFC Cup on Wednesday to claim third place in the group.

With both teams already out of the competition, there was little to play for when these two sides met. However, both managers should be given credit for setting up their sides to attack and create chances.

After a cagey start, Phoutdavy Phommasane scored a screamer from well outside the box on the 30-minute mark to give the home side the early advantage.

After 40 minutes Christopher Iyikwobe then equalised for Ayeyawady with a scuffed shot which skidded along the ground and into the bottom left corner of the goal in very fortuitous fashion.

Just after the half-time interval a very well worked free-kick took play down the left flank before the ball was drilled across goal for Min Min Thu to power home from close range for the first of his two goals.

Five minutes after the interval and Thu was at it again, as a ball was whipped in from the right and a glancing header saw him score his second of the evening and earn his side a 3-1 lead.

Lao Toyota continued to press though and in the 87th minute a speedy counter-attack saw Sitthideth Khanthavong score with his right-foot in a finish that shouted Thierry Henry.

The remaining four minutes went by without any major scares for the visitors and the match ended 3-2 in their favour.

Group H finished with Johor Darul Ta’zim top after accumulating 18 points from six games with Bengaluru FC second with nine points. Ayeyawady claimed third with six points while Lao Toyota ended their campaign in last place with just three points.
