West Zone Wrap: Al Wehdat sneak through

In a dramatic last round of matches on the West side of the AFC Cup on Tuesday, there were wins for Al Wehdat, Al Hidd, Nafit Al Wasat and Tripoli Club.

Al Wehdat 3-2 Al Ahed FC

Al Wehdat slipped into the knock-out stages of the AFC Cup after recording a fantastic victory over Group A winners Al Ahed FC who were unbeaten prior to Tuesday.

Hussein Haidar had given Al Ahed the lead after just three minutes but goals from Ahmad Hisham and Mohammad Mustafa gifted Al Wehdat an unlikely lead at half-time.

Ahmad Zriek’s goal eight minutes from time looked to have salvaged a draw for Al Ahed, only for Baha’ Faisal to net the winner five minutes later.

Altyn Asyr FC 1-2 Al Hidd

In Group A’s other fixture Al Hidd wreaked havoc as they defeated Altyn Asyr FC who only needed to win to be guaranteed of second spot.

Suleyman Muhadov looked to have given his side the win they needed after he scored in the 58th minute. However, two goals in two minutes from Ahmed Al Khattal and substitute Uche Agba in the 75th and 76th minute respectively shattered the dreams of Dmitriy Korj’s team.

Group A finished with Al Ahed FC at the top with 12 points (this much had been confirmed prior to Matchday Six). Al Wehdat claimed second with eight points. After winning their last two games on the bounce Al Hidd finished in third with seven points. Disappointingly, Altyn Asyr FC slid from second to last in the space of 90 minutes as they closed with six points.

Nafit Al Wasat 1-0 Al Faisaly

The winner of this game was to be crowned champions of Group B and Al Wasat rose superbly to the occasion and produced a fine game of controlled and disciplined football.

Jassim Mohammed scored the only goal of the game seven minutes into the second half as he spectacularly slammed his shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.

FC Istiklol 1-3 Tripoli Club

With not much at stake for either side as they both had no chance of progressing in the competition, this game lacked the intensity that is often associated with AFC Cup matches.

However, that never stopped Tripoli Club from stringing together some fine passages of attacking play and scoring three wonderful goals en route to their second victory of the campaign.

The goal scorers for the Lebanese club were Saad Youssef, Michael Helegbe and Walid Fattouh. While Fathullo Fathuloev got FC Istiklol’s only goal of the game.

Al Wasat advanced to the knock-out stages as Group B victors with 15 points. Al Faisaly secured second with 11 points. Tripoli Club finished third with seven points while FC Istiklol ended in last with just one point.
