New Radiant and Kaya FC played out to a dull goalless draw on Tuesday in Group F of the AFC Cup, which allowed the latter to progress to the knock-out stages.
Kaya only needed to avoid defeat on Matchday Six in order to progress and they parked the bus and were clinical in completing a shut-out.
In the opening exchanges the game was largely played in the middle of the field as both sides struggled to hold on to the ball in front of goal.
New Radiant then had a great chance to break the deadlock just before the half-hour mark but Izzath Baree’s athletic header from inside the six-yard box was off target after Waheed Rilwan’s well-weighted cross from the right found him in space at the back post.
After the interval Kaya came out with more intensity and that resulted in their first decent opening in the 50th minute as Shirmar Felongco made space for himself on the edge of the area before firing his left-foot effort over the crossbar.
A lot of possession for Kaya followed however they were unable to convert that into chances or goals and the game slowly stuttered to a close without either keeper really being put under any sort of pressure.
After the completion of all group matches, Group F was won by Kitchee with 13 points. Kaya finished second with 10 points. Balestier Khalsa were third with seven points after losing 0-4 to Kitchee. New Radiant finished in last place with only three points.
Kaya will now face defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim in the Round of 16. This is the first time the club from the Philippines has made it past the group stages.
