La Liga side Real Betis have signed Gus Poyet as their new head coach on a two-year deal.
Poyet joins the Spanish outfit from Greek side AEK Athens, whose owner Dimitris Melissanidis labelled the Uruguayan as “immoral” after he announced his intention to depart for Spain at the end of the season.
Poyet, who has previously had spells with Brighton and Sunderland, had also been linked with a return to England, with some reports suggesting he was set to take over at Nottingham Forest.
At Real Betis, he will take over from interim boss Juan Merino.
A statement from the club read: “Real Betis have signed Uruguayan coach Gustavo Poyet as new Betis coach for the next two seasons.
“Poyet will be one of the cornerstones of the new sports project headed by Miguel Torrecilla.
“Real Betis want to especially thank the work done by Juan Merino and his coaching staff this season, who has managed to ward off the team from the lower part of the division.”
