Cameroon international Patrick Ekeng died on Friday evening after collapsing on the field during a match for his Romanian club Dinamo Bucharest.
The 26-year-old was introduced as a second-half substitute in the league game against Viitorul, but he collapsed seven minutes after coming onto the field.
The match was televised live locally and media reported he went into cardiac arrest.
He was rushed to hospital and received CPR for more than an hour and half before being declared dead.
Ekeng only moved to Romania earlier this season after his contract with Spanish outfit Cordoba was terminated in August 2015.
Born in Yaounde, he represented Cameroon at Under-20 level before making his full international debut as a second-half substitute against the DR Congo in January 2015 and he would go on to make six more appearances for the Indomitable Lions.
He started his professional career with Canon Yaounde before moving to Le Mans in France in 2009.
