Newcastle travel to Villa Park on Saturday in their penultimate fixture of the season with Aston Villa's fate already sealed.
The Magpies, who are embroiled in a relegation scrap with Norwich and local rivals Sunderland, require nothing less than a win ahead of their match against Tottenham on the final day of the campaign.
The Tynesiders seemed dead and buried, but two wins and two draws have seen Rafael Benitez's side climb out the drop zone. They occupy 17th place in the table, two points ahead of the Canaries and a point above the Black Cats, who both have a game in hand.
Luckily for Benitez, he couldn't have picked a more favourable opponent than this Villa team, who suffered their 11th consecutive defeat at Watford last weekend. That said, one of Villa's 16 points this term was picked up against the Toon, back in December.
Internal friction and player misconduct have added to the toxic atmosphere at Villa Park, which grows emptier and emptier with every passing home match.
Benitez will have to decide whether to recall Aleksandar Mitrovic to the starting line-up, at the expense of Papiss Cisse, who has started the last four games. Daryl Janmaat is expected to return to the squad following a hand injury.
For the Villains, Micah Richards, Jack Grealish and Jordan Veretout all come back into contention, while Gabby Agbonlahor is expected to miss out once again due to disciplinary issues.
