Robben backs Depay to succeed

Bayern München winger Arjen Robben has backed Memphis Depay to succeed at Manchester United after an underwhelming debut campaign for the club.

Depay joined the Red Devils after leading PSV to the Eredivisie title and starring for his country in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but could be offloaded in the off-season after failing to live up to his initial expectations.

Robben feels his Netherlands international team-mate still has a future in the Premier League as he is still young, and believes Depay will be given time to develop at Old Trafford.

“He’s a very talented player, but you can’t underestimate how big a step it is up to the Premier League, and especially to a big club like Man United,” Robben told the Match of the Day magazine.

“He’s still very young – you have to give him some time. The talent is there – he’s got everything that he needs to be a success in England.”

Despite the 22-year-old winger’s struggles, he has managed to score seven goals and register nine assists across all competitions this term.
