1. FSV Mainz 05 defender Leon Balogun has successfully appealed against his ban for violent conduct, resulting in his suspension being reduced to just two matches.
Balogun found himself in hot water last week when he kneed Carlos Zambrano in their 2-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt. The referee did not see the incident, but it was caught by television cameras at the stadium, resulting in a retroactive ban after an investigation by the German FA's Football Disciplinary Tribunal.
However, Mainz appealed the original sanction handed down to their player and announced their motion had succeeded.
"On 3rd May, after a verbal hearing with the German Football Association's sports tribunal, Leon Balogun's suspension for blatant misconduct in the form of violence against an opponent was reduced to two games and a 10,000 Euros fine after the charge was reduced to careless conduct," the club said in a statement.
"The panel reduced the decision of a three-game ban that was originally given out by a single judge. Balogun as well as the club Mainz 05 agreed to the new judgement.
"The change means that the centre-back will be available for Mainz's final home match of the season against Hertha BSC (Saturday 14th May)."
