Korea Republic’s Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors face Jiangsu Suning FC of China in a must win game in Group E of the AFC Champions League at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium on Wednesday.
With one match to play Jeonbuk top the group standings with nine points, followed by Suning on eight points. In third place is FC Tokyo with seven points with Becamex Binh Duong of Vietnam on four points.
In February, Jeonbuk started off their group campaign at home by beating Tokyo 2-1, then lost 3-2 at Suning before winning 2-0 at home against Becamex. In the return leg against the Vietnamese outfit, Jeonbuk lost 3-2. Last time out they won 3-0 in Tokyo.
The player to look out for in the Jeonbuk side is captain and forward Lee Dong-gook, who has scored three goals in this season’s competition.
In domestic action in the K League Classic after eight games, Jeonbuk are second on the table with 16 points, three behind FC Seoul at the top. In their last match on Saturday, they defeated Suwon FC 3-1.
Suning kicked off their group stage matches by drawing 1-1 at Becamex and then defeated Jeonbuk 3-2 at home and followed that up with a 0-0 draw in Tokyo. In the return leg against the Japanese outfit, they lost 2-1 at home before winning their last outing 3-0 against Becamex in Nanjing.
The danger-man in the Suning side is Brazilian forward Jo, who has also scored three goals so far.
In an interview with Xinhua, Suning head coach Dan Petrescu said that their away game would be extremely difficult but believes they can still qualify for the last 16.
“We could qualify for the Round of 16 if we win, but if we lose, we will have to see what happens between FC Tokyo and Binh Duong,” said Petrescu.
In domestic action in the Chinese Super League, Jiangsu are second in the standings on 17 points after seven games and one point behind Guangzhou Evergrande on top. Last time out in league action on Friday they defeated Changchun Yatai 2-0.
