Sporting Gijon claimed an important 2-0 win over Eibar on Friday night to boost their chances of survival in La Liga.
Jonathan Rodriguez was the man of the hour, scoring the first goal and helping to create the second as Gijon lifted themselves out of the Spanish relegation zone, leapfrogging Granada, who play Las Palmas on Saturday.
It was an important bounce back for the home side, who had just come off a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Barcelona last weekend.
Despite the 2-0 scoreline, it was Eibar who dominated in the early stages of the game.
Gijon managed to take the lead against the run of play, however, with their first attempt on goal, as Rodriguez lifted the ball for Carlos Carmona to head home two minutes before half-time.
Eibar’s Sergi Enrich nearly equalised after the break, but his effort hit the post, allowing Rodriguez to all but make sure of the points with a counter-attacking goal eight minutes from time.
