FC Augsburg and 1. FC Köln seemed happy to settle for a point each as they played out a 0-0 draw at WWK Arena on Friday.
- Augsburg 0 Köln 0
- Lehmann sent off
The deadlock was seldom threatened in an evenly contested but ultimately frustrating match in which neither side did enough to merit the victory, with Matthias Lehmann’s red card offering a rare moment of drama.
The first half passed with little action of note and no shots on target from either team. Dominic Maroh came close in just the second minute with an effort from inside the box, but he managed to miss the target despite being just in front of the penalty spot.
Tobias Werner also threatened with a header over the crossbar from close-range after getting on the end of Philipp Max’s cross, but subsequent efforts were speculative and off the mark, with Tobias Werner, Marcel Risse, Halil Altintop, Yannick Gerhardt, and Filip Mladenovic all missing the target as well.
Köln’s task was made tougher in the 56th minute when midfielder Matthias Lehmann picked up his second yellow card, but the hosts struggled to fully capitalise on this advantage.
The second half saw Ragnar Klavan head over the bar and Tobias Werner do the same from close-range, before Anthony Modeste tested the goalkeeper at the other end of the pitch.
Raúl Bobadilla, Halil Altintop, Markus Feulner and Alfred Finnbogason all tried to give the game its first shot on target, but none of them could force the opposition keeper into a save.
Alfred Finnbogason managed a rare shot between the sticks when he forced Timo Horn into a save in the 75th minute, while Milos Jojic did the same for Köln with his long-range attempt on the 90-minute mark.
