Atleti grab narrow advantage over Bayern

Atletico Madrid will take a slender lead into the deciding leg of their Champions League semi-final after beating Bayern 1-0 on Wednesday night.

  • Atletico 1 Bayern 0
  • Hosts pressure early
  • Niguez grabs lead
  • Visitors fight back without success

Match Summary

Atletico were clearly eager to make their home advantage count and their attacking intent paid off when Saul Niguez gave them the lead with a superb strike in the 11th minute.

While the hosts dominated the first half, Bayern came back strongly after the break and squandered numerous chances to go level.

The Bavarians now go into the second leg knowing they have to score at least once if they are to have any chance of progressing to the final.

Full Report

Atletico Madrid showed their intentions early on and Niguez tried a long-range attempt just four minutes in, but it was an easy save for Manuel Neuer to make.

Fernando Torres then dribbled past two defenders before unleashing a low drive toward the bottom corner, but the shot lacked venom and the Bayern goalkeeper was once again there to make the save.

The Bavarians did not heed the early warning signs from the hosts and found themselves behind in the 11th minute when Niguez ghosted into the area before capping off a superb solo effort with a neat strike off the post to give Atleti a 1-0 lead.

The visitors best chance of the half came 25 minutes into the game when Douglas Costa sent a free kick inches wide of the post.

It seemed like Neuer was the only thing standing between Bayern and a big defeat as Antoine Griezmann darted into the box before hitting a powerful low shot, but the Bavarians shot stopper was once again able to block it.

The Bundesliga outfit was much improved after the break as they went in search of a vital away goal. David Alaba rattled the crossbar 10 minutes after the restart before Javi Martinez' low header was well saved by Jan Oblak.

However, they were very nearly caught on the counter with 15 minutes left on the clock as Torres used some neat skill to get between two defenders before trying an audacious outside of the boot curler that unluckily hit the far post and rebounded out.

Alaba went a whisker away from scoring what would have been a crucial equalising goal when he found some space on the edge of the area to shoot but saw the attempt brush the outside of the post as it flew wide and the game finished 1-0 in favour of Atletico.
