Sevilla kept their European hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Real Betis in the Seville derby at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Sunday.
Second-half goals from Kevin Gameiro (67′) and Coke (80′) handed Unai Emery’s side their first win in six La Liga outings as they closed to within two points of the top-six in seventh place.
Betis saw a three-match unbeaten run come to an end as they ended the weekend in 13th spot, nine points clear of the bottom-three.
Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao staged a late comeback to earn a 2-2 draw against rock-bottom Levante at Ciutat de Valencia.
Les Granotes took a one-goal lead into the break courtesy of Víctor Casadesus’ 13th-minute opener, and they appeared to be on course for a crucial victory in the fight against relegation when Xabier Etxeitia deflected a cross from Jose Luis Morales into his own net on 68 minutes.
But two quick-fire goals from Markel Susaeta (88′) and Mikel San Jose (90′) at the death rescued a share of the spoils for Los Leones, who find themselves six points adrift of the top-four in fifth spot, while Levante are still four points away from safety with three games left to play.
Meanwhile, Getafe edged a point closer to safety after they played out to a 2-2 draw with Valencia at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.
After a goalless first half, the game sprung to life in the second stanza with Daniel Parejo giving Los Che the lead on 48 minutes before Alvaro Medran responded with an equaliser for the Azulones 11 minutes later.
The hosts then went in front on 68 minutes when Stefan Scepovic raced clear to beat the keeper in a one-on-one, but Paco Alcacer volleyed home six minutes from time to rescue a point for Valencia, who moved up to eighth place after extending their unbeaten run to four games, with Juan Esnaider’s side a point adrift of safety in 19th spot.
In the late kick-off, Villarreal extended their winless run to three matches as they were held to a goalless draw by Real Sociedad at El Madrigal.
The Yellow Submarine remain six points clear of the chasing back in fourth position, while La Real are down in 11th place having failed to win their last three games.
