One club was fighting for Europe and the other fighting to stay in the Bundesliga. With only three matches left in the season, this was always going to be a scrappy affair.

Both teams pushed hard for an early opener, which came for the visitors via a terrific 25-yard free-kick by the most unlikely of players. Brosinski’s last goal for Mainz came seven long years ago.

Anis Ben-Hatira’s 28th-minute square ball into the Mainz box caused confusion for the visitors, who failed to clear the ball, allowing Russ to equalise.

Both keepers kept their teams’ hopes for three points alive with Karius twice denying Stefan Seferovic and Hradecky keeping out Jhon Cordoba.

The match remained at 1-1 until the 84th minute when Ben-Hatira found enough space for a dangerous cross that was deflected in by a mortified Bell, to whom the goal was ultimately accredited.
