Match summary

Cisse and Colback netted in the second half to ensure Newcastle left Anfield with a crucial point in their bid to beat the drop after the Toon were 2-0 down at half-time.

Liverpool hit the ground running with Daniel Sturridge scoring in the second minute and Adam Lallana adding a second on the half-hour mark.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez must have read the riot act at half-time and the visitors were much more of a threat in the second half.

The North-East outfit are now level on points with 18th-placed Sunderland as they look to stay in the top flight.

Full report

Newcastle suffered an early blow as Liverpool opened the scoring after just 68 seconds. Alberto Moreno hit a free-kick from the left and Sturridge chested down the long ball just inside the box. The striker then turned and fired a low shot into the far corner.

Liverpool doubled their advantage when Lallana netted in the 30th minute. Moreno passed to Lallana, who collected the ball on the edge of the box and curled a left-footed shot high into the net.

Newcastle pulled one back early in the second half when Vurnon Anita sent in a deep cross from the right and Cisse headed in from eight yards. Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet hardly covered himself in glory as he completely failed to collect the cross and all of a sudden Newcastle had a sense that they could get something from the game.

Liverpool thought they had a third when Joe Allen's header was saved by Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow and Firmino tapped in from close range, but the attacker was offside.

And Newcastle then equalised in the 66th minute when Townsend chipped in a cross that was nodded down for Colback, whose first-time effort took a deflection and beat Mignolet.

Benitez will be delighted with Newcastle's second-half comeback and their hopes of beating the drop remain alive, while Jurgen Klopp will lament the fact that his Liverpool team threw away a 2-0 lead.
