FC Bayern München midfielder Javi Martinez believes Arturo Vidal has become one of the club’s most important players in the Champions League this season.
Vidal scored in both legs of the Bavarians’ quarter-final win over Benfica in Europe’s elite club competition, but it’s his role as a holding midfielder that has really set him apart this term.
Martinez says the Chilean’s aggressive approach to the game gives him a distinct advantage, but warned there are times he needs to dial it back a bit.
“Arturo is possibly our most important and decisive player in the Champions League,” he told reporters.
“He runs a lot, wins his personal duels and is very dangerous going forward. His aggressive attitude is a real plus for us. He always gives his all.
“He is enjoying himself out there and is a big threat to any opponent. Sometimes he has to control his temper, though.”
Martinez also took time out to praise the performances of Thomas Muller this term, who he believes has done enough to be considered alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the FIFA Ballon d’Or.
“Thomas should be considered for the Ballon d’Or,” the Spaniard added. “He has done some fantastic things over the past few years. Not just at international level at World Cups and European championships, but also at club level.
“He will definitely be on the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or and he will be getting closer to top spot step by step.”
