De Canio: Udinese safe but need to keep winning

Udinese boss Gigi De Canio was delighted with his team's performance against Fiorentina on Wednesday night, saying that the club has now successfully avoided relegation.

Udinese's victory sees them leapfrog both Sampdoria and Bologna, neither of whom managed to record a win in their respective midweek matches, into 14th position in the league table.

De Canio's Zebrette were 1-0 up a mere two minutes into the contest, but could only hang onto their lead for 23 minutes as Mauro Zarate levelled matters. However, the hosts rallied well after the break and scored the winning goal shortly in the 53rd minute through Cyril Thereau.

Manager De Canio spoke to the club's official website after the match, praising his players and dedicating the win to the team's supporters.

"I'd like to highlight the team's spirit since this was a tough night against a great team. We were eager to win, we stayed solid when Fiorentina equalised and we always believed we could win. We did it, it's a nice result," he said.

"We've had some performances that gave back the team to its fans. I think that tonight the fans saw a lot of themselves in the spirit of this team. Ours is a great club, a club I've always felt close to me also in the previous weeks.

"Udinese get this kind of results thanks to the symbiotic relationship between team and club, there's an harmony which leads players to play for these colours, for this club and for these fans. I've worked in order to create this symbiosis I thought it was lost.

"There were a few players who weren't so happy when I arrived, but I've always been coherent and clear and these players calmed down and committed themselves in order to make it hard for me to make my choices. Domizzi could have also started in place of Felipe, I changed my mind only because he hadn't been playing for a long time and I didn't want to waste a substitution. I think he helped the team, it wasn't a gift. He's working well and he's been useful also thanks to his experience.

"As soon as I entered the dressing room I told my players not to relax, it is right to be happy but we have to look forward and try to do as best as we can in these last games. This team deserves to be in a better position. We're practically safe but we need to keep on picking up points."
