1. FSV Mainz 05 saw their Champions League hopes fade further away after they squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 against 1. FC Köln at the Coface Arena on Sunday.
- Mainz 2 Köln 3
- Jhon Cordoba gives hosts early lead
- Leon Balogun adds second after half-time
- Marcel Risse pulls one back for visitors
- Milos Jojic equalises soon afterwards
- Anthony Modeste secures comeback win
Köln got off to a flying start when Cordoba opened the scoring after just eight minutes and they appeared to be cruising when Balogun made it 2-0 early in the second half.
But the visitors found their stride and pulled one back through Risse on 64 minutes, before Jojic restored parity 10 minutes later, with Modeste completing the comeback win seven minutes from time.
Peter Stoger’s side pulled six points clear of the bottom-three to move up to 10th place, while Mainz remain sixth in the standings, four points adrift of the top-four with six games left to play.
The hosts made a promising start and they were celebrating the lead from a corner on eight minutes as Cordoba fired home from just three yards out.
Martin Schmidt’s men went close to doubling their lead 10 minutes later when Stefan Bell connected with Christian Clemens’ cross, but his header from 10 yards out was saved by Timo Horn.
Moments later Köln created their first clear-cut chance as Matthias Lehmann headed the ball down for Modeste, whose shot from 20 yards out forced a save out of Loris Karius.
The only other meaningful chance in the opening 45 minutes saw Danny Latza test Horn with a strike from 22 yards out midway through the first half.
Mainz made an even better start to the second half as they scored just four minutes in, with Balogun heading Daniel Brosinski’s free-kick past Horn from six yards out.
Brosinski drew a save out of Horn with his shot from inside the area on the right on 63 minutes and it proved crucial as the visiting team found a reply moments later.
Risse received the ball from a corner outside the area and drilled his shot across Karius into the far bottom corner of the net.
Mainz looked to respond and Bell sent a header straight at Horn from six yards out on 66 minutes, before Clemens drew another save out of the keeper with his effort from the edge of the area four minutes later.
But instead it was Köln who struck again, Jojic pouncing from close range following Yannick Gerhardt’s ball into the danger area on 74 minutes.
Worse was to follow for the Champions League hopefuls nine minutes later as Modeste collected a pass from Lehmann just outside the area and flashed a shot past Karius to seal the come-from-behind victory.
