FC Bayern München defender Medhi Benatia has dismissed claims that he will miss the Champions League clash with Benfica in Lisbon due to leaving his passport at home.
The Morocco international returned to training on Monday after missing the last four games for Bayern with a hamstring injury, and was expected to make the matchday squad for the trip to Portugal.
But after Benatia failed to depart Munich with the rest of Pep Guardiola’s squad, reports in Germany claimed the 28-year-old centre-back had been left behind because he forgot to bring his passport along.
However, the France-born player has insisted that is not the case; he didn’t make the journey as the club felt he wasn’t ready to make a comeback in the Champions League quarter-final, second-leg tie.
“Some rumours explain my absence at the game to face Benfica by ‘forget my passport’,” he wrote on Facebook.
“I want to deny this information. I am not of the trip because the staff has taken the decision not to let me participate in the movement, something which seems to go in the normal in the light of my recent return from injury (sic).”
