Yangon and Mohun draw in AFC Cup

Myanmar side Yangon United drew 1-1 with India’s Mohun Bagan in Group G of the AFC Cup at the Youth Training Centre in Yangon on Wednesday.

Brazilian forward Adilson opened the scoring for Yangon in the 26th minute but striker Cornell Glen got the equaliser in the 42nd minute for Mohun.

With two games to go in the group, Mohun top the standings on 10 points with Yangon next on five points.

Maldives’ Maziya Sports & Recreation are next with four points, with their opponents later on Wednesday, Hong Kong side South China, at the bottom of the standings with three defeats.

In the first-half, Yangon often defended deep in an attempt to catch Mohun on the break. Mohun’s Glen, Jeje Lalpekhlua and Subash Singh pressurised the Yangon defence early on but could not find a way past solid defending.

Then, against the run of play, Yangon scored in the 26th minute when forwards Kyaw Ko Ko and Adilson exchanged passes to split the Mohun defence for Adilson to score with a low shot from the edge of the box,to give his side the 1-0 lead.

Being a goal down did not stop Mohun from attacking and in the 42nd minute they got the equaliser.

A quality pass by Lenny Rodrigues found Glen just outside the penalty area. He then dribbled into the box and scored with a left-footed shot that beat goalkeeper Luiz Fernando to level matters.

In the second half, the visitors continued to attack but could not crack the vigilant Yangon defence.

In the 80th minute, Yangon were awarded a free-kick after keeper Arnab Das Sarma handled the ball just outside the area. The ensuing set piece found Adilson in space but his shot took a deflection to go out of play.

In the dying minutes, Mohan nearly got the winner when an accurate pass from Katsumi Yusa found Luciano Sabrosa, but the Brazilian defender fired his shot way over the bar for the match to end in a draw.
