Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel reveals he is a big fan of the sweeper-keeper role Manuel Neuer plays for FC Bayern München and wants to be quicker off the line himself.
Schmeichel has been in superb form for the Foxes this season, helping them to the top of the Premier League table, ahead of the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester City.
As it stands, his total of 12 clean sheets from 31 is bettered only by Manchester City’s Joe Hart, but the 29-year-old is always looking for ways to improve his game.
One area that his caught his eye is the way Neuer is so quick to come off his line for the Bavarians, allowing the defence to push higher up the pitch and not worry about getting hit with a long overhead pass.
“Neuer’s so proactive it’s incredible,” Schmeichel told the Times. “Neuer’s changing the way of goalkeeping. The bravery in making those types of decisions is what sets him apart from anybody else in the world.
“Neuer has taken it to a level where he’ll chest the ball and keep the play going. The centre backs know he’s so far forward that if anything goes over their heads he’ll be there. I try to do that – quick off the line.”
