FC Bayern München moved a step closer to defending the Bundesliga title after they ran out narrow 1-0 victors over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.
- Bayern 1 Frankfurt 0
- Ribery gives hosts first-half lead
- Alonso hits woodwork with free-kick
- Bayern record third straight win
Franck Ribery scored the only goal of the game in the first half as Pep Guardiola’s side recorded a third successive win the league to open up an eight-point gap to second-placed Borussia Dortmund.
Die Adler, meanwhile, remain second from bottom in the standings, although only an inferior goal difference keeps them in the relegation zone as they are tied on 27 points with the two teams directly above them.
The defending league champions struggled to assert themselves on the fixture, although the visitors barely threatened in Munich and managed just four shots, none of them on target.
Robert Lewandowski missed a couple of early chances before Mario Gotze saw his shot from 20 yards out saved by the foot of visiting goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky on 20 minutes.
However, there was nothing Hradecky could do to prevent Ribery from opening the scoring moments later on the rebound with an acrobatic effort from just inside the area.
Bayern continued to be frustrated by Frankfurt, who kept them down to one goal at the break, and Niko Kovac’s men almost hit back seconds after the restart as Szabolcs Huszti fired just wide of goal from inside the area on the left.
The woodwork then came to Die Adler’s rescue on 52 minutes as Xabi Alonso struck the underside of the crossbar with a free-kick from 25 yards out, before the Spanish midfielder was denied by a superb diving save from Hradecky.
The Bundesliga strugglers even enjoyed a spell of possession in the closing stages as they pinned the hosts back in their own half, but Bayern managed to hold on for the three points.
