1. FSV Mainz 05 striker Yoshinori Muto has aggravated his knee injury just days after returning to training from a three-week lay-off.
The Japan international sat out the last seven Bundesliga games for Die Nullfunfer due to a knee ligament injury he sustained in the 1-0 win over Hannover on February 6.
The club announced on Tuesday that Muto had rejoined his team-mates for a training session and could make his comeback against FC Augsburg on Saturday.
However, those plans have been shelved after the 23-year-old suffered a recurrence of the problem on Thursday, which could bring a premature end to his season.
“#Muto has suffered more ligament damage and will likely miss the rest of the season,” the club said on Twitter.
