Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique must do without Jeremy Mathieu for up to eight weeks after the defender underwent knee surgery this week.
Mathieu tore the meniscus in his right knee during France’s 4-2 win over Russia on Tuesday, just eight minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.
Subsequent scans revealed the extent of the damage and the 32-year-old could miss the run-in to the season after going under the knife to rectify the problem.
“FC Barcelona defender Jérémy Mathieu was successfully operated on Thursday by doctors Ramon Cugat and Ricard Pruna following an injury to the meniscus in his right knee,” read a club statement.
“Mathieu will be out between six and eight weeks.”
The France international has made 28 appearances for the Blaugrana in all major competitions this term, helping them open up a nine-point lead over the chasing pack in the Spanish top flight.
