Heynckes: Dortmund can beat Bayern

Former Bayern München boss Jupp Heynckes believes that BVB Dortmund have the team to beat the Bavarians in this weekend's highly-anticipated encounter.

Bayern are currently four points clear of Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga standings, having won all seven of their opening league fixtures. Dortmund have enjoyed a significantly better start to the campaign than in their ill-fated 2014/15 season, and are unbeaten this far, but are already struggling to keep up with the pace of their rivals.

However, Heynckes feels that Dortmund have a realistic chance of downing Bayern when the two sides meet on Saturday.

"Yes, I do think so," he told the official Bundesliga website when asked if Dortmund can win the fixture.

"And it's good that the Bundesliga is not over before it has even started. Instead, you have two or even three clubs competing for the title. But one thing is clear, Borussia Dortmund are clear rivals for Bayern this season."

The man who guided Bayern to the treble in 2013 believes that new Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel has the skill to mastermind a victory.

"He's incredibly ambitious and a meticulous hard worker," Heynckes said of Tuchel. "He's come a long way in terms of communicating with his players and general management, over and above the general football specifics which he had already mastered.

"Whenever I have watched him, heard him talk or seen how he goes about his work, he's come across to me as a passionate coach with a clearly defined concept."

If Dortmund are to launch a challenge for the league title, Heynckes sees Tuchel's squad management and his ability to deal with injuries as being key.

"The important thing for Thomas will be to cope with the inevitable wear and tear by rotating his squad with sensitivity and a deft touch, and also that his players come through the season without major injuries," he explained.

"Obviously Bayern have the better, high quality squad and are better prepared for losing players."
