Borussia MG 2-0 VfL Wolfsburg
First half ends goalless
Nordtveit breaks the deadlock
Traore doubles home side's lead
The visiting Wolves would have fancied their chances of claiming all three points, having made a strong start to the campaign.
However, It was the hosts who came to the party on the day, Havard Nordtveit breaking the deadlock on 75 minutes before Ibrahima Traoré slotted home four minutes later to double their advantage.
The Bundelsiga encounter started at a cautious pace, with neither side willing to commit too many men forward in attack in the opening ten minutes.
However, the match sprang to life on 11 minutes, when Daniel Caligiuri fired wide of the mark from the right-hand side of the box after being teed up by André Schürrle.
The Foals launched a quick attack from the resulting goal kick and went agonisingly close to claiming the lead as Lars Stindl struck the left-hand post with a shot from the centre of the box.
Wolfsburg hit back with another effort just one minute later, but Schürrle saw his goal-bound effort saved in the centre of goal by keeper Maximilian Arnold.
The next chance of note arrived on the 25-minute mark, Mönchengladbach's Ibrahima Traoré firing wide of the left-hand post with a speculative effort from distance.
The visitors continued to create good chances as the half wore on, Timm Klose and Marcel Schäfer going close to breaking the deadlock.
It was the hosts who should have gone into the half-time break with the lead, though, after Raffael was denied by Diego Benaglio in the Wolfsburg goal.
Wolfsburg came flying out of the traps in the second period in a bid to create an early breakthrough and very nearly did just that. Josuha Guilavogui flicked a headed pass into the path of Schürrle, who lashed a powerful effort high and wide from outside the box.
The opening goal eventually materialised in the 75th minute, Nordtveit finding the bottom-left corner with a driven shot from outside the area after latching on to a pass from Raffael.
Wolfsburg were still reeling from the opening goal when Borussia MG struck again four minutes later, Traoré converting with a smart finish from the centre of the box after being found by Lars Stindl's searching pass.
The visitors launched forward in numbers as the half came to close, but were unable to pull one back as efforts from substitute Nicklas Bendtner and Max Kruse failed to beat Tobias Sippel in the home side's goal.
