Frankfurt had the first chance of the match in the fifth minute when Marco Russ met a cross from Szabolcs Huszti with a volley, but he shot was wide of the post.

Three minutes later and Hannover had a chance when Kenan Karaman let loose from long range, but goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky was there for the save.

Frankfurt took the lead in the 33rd minute when Tunisia international Änis Ben-Hatira latched onto the ball after Stefan Aigner danced into the box, doing well with his first touch before squeezing it over the line from a tight angle.

Japanese midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotake had the first real chance of the second half for Hannover when he let fly from long-range in the 55th minute, and saw his effort fly narrowly wide of goal.

And Ben-Hatira came close to his second of the night in the 66th minute when a swift counterattack saw Haris Seferovic feed him the ball inside the box, but he dragged his effort wide.

Ben-Hatira came close against when he sneaked in on goal in the 71st minute. Makoto Hasebe’s header into the box was not dealt with by the Hannover defence, who didn’t see Ben-Hatira arrive at the far post, but they had Ron-Robert Zieler to thank as he closed the forward down to make the block.

Hannover’s next chance to equalise came in the 89th minute when Edgar Prib latched onto a header from Ádám Szalai to fire at goal from the left flank and force Hradecky into another save that helped his team earn three precious points.
