Brady fires Norwich out of drop zone

A second-half strike from Robbie Brady fired Norwich City out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over West Brom at The Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.

  • West Brom 0 Norwich City 1
  • Brady profits from sluggish defending
  • Yacob closest for uninventive Baggies
  • Norwich three points clear of relegation

Match Summary

Brady sent the travelling Norwich City fans into delirium with a 50th-minute strike after a first-half where West Brom created the better opportunities.

Claudio Yacob came closest for the Baggies with a 15th-minute thunderbolt but the hosts were particularly flat in comparison to their recent wins against the likes of Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Everton.

The crucial win sees Norwich leapfrog Sunderland into 17th place ahead of the gargantuan Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday. West Brom stay plugged in 11th position.

After a relatively open start, West Brom began to look the more threatening side going forward as they searched for a fourth win in five Premier League games and, more importantly, reach the magic 40-point marker.

Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy almost gifted the Baggies an early lead when his stray clearance fell straight to the in-form Salomon Rondon, but the Venezuelan was not alert enough and allowed Sebastian Bassong to step in and tidy up.

A thunderous strike from Yacob soon followed and he was inches away from finding the top right corner after he pounced on a lay-off from Saido Berahino, who went close himself just moments before with a quick flash across the face of goal.

A very scrappy affair then ensued until the half-time whistle blew, with an off-target shot from a hesitant Stephane Sessegnon the only other glimpse of goal at The Hawthorns.

Starting the day in the drop zone, it was Norwich who were the side in the more desperate need of points and manager Alex Neil seemed to remind his players of that fact during the interval.

Five minutes after the restart Matthew Jarvis beat a sluggish West Brom defence to a half-hearted clearance and slotted in Brady, who broke the deadlock with a strike that found the left corner of the goal.

Brady then suffered what looked like a nasty-looking fall on his neck when challenging for the ball, but after physio treatment he was able to continue. The incident helped take the sting out of the game as the Baggies’ attacking woes continued.

Tony Pulis threw on Rickie Lambert in a last-ditch attempt to rescue a point; however, the Canaries held on for a vital three points which could prove decisive come the end of the season.
