Garde: We have the obligation to believe

Despite the situation looking very bleak, Aston Villa manager Remi Garde has told his players that they must believe that they can escape relegation in the final weeks of the season.

Villa sit at the bottom of the Premier League standings having only accumulated 16 points from their 30 games, and are nine points from safety with eight matches of the season left to play.

The Midlands club have lost all of their last five matches, conceding 17 goals and scoring just two, but Garde has urged his team to keep on fighting ahead of their match away to Swansea City on Saturday.

“We still have the obligation to believe,” Garde insisted. “It’s something we should have inside every player, inside myself. Of course we are in a very bad period with five defeats.

“We have a very important away game. It’s always difficult. Even if Swansea are not in the best position, they are in a far better position than us. They need also to win.”

The French manager also gave an update on injured players in his squad and is happy to have Carlos Sanchez “fit and available”.

“Long-term injuries are Jack Grealish and Adama Traore. They won’t be fit for this weekend,” he added. “Hopefully they will be available for selection for the Chelsea game after the international break.”
