Former Sunderland manager Gus Poyet believes Sam Allardyce is the right man for the job at the Stadium of Light and believes he could keep them in the Premier League.
Dick Advocaat departed the club last week following a dismal start that has seen the Black Cats fail to win a game, and they are now languishing in the relegation zone eight matches into the new Premier League campaign.
Allardyce has emerged as the favourite to succeed the Dutchman at the North East club and Poyet believes the former West Ham boss has experience to maintain their top-flight status.
"He knows the Premier League inside out and he knows exactly what a team needs to do to stay in the Premier League," Poyet is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.
"He has done it everywhere he has been so it’s not something new. That experience of being there for so long will definitely help."
