Johor Darul Ta’zim will look to continue their unbeaten run when they host Lao Toyota in their AFC Cup Group H clash on Wednesday.
The defending AFC Cup champions have been in sizzling form, with two comfortable wins seeing them top the group on six points.
Ayeyawady United and Lao follow on three points each, while Bengaluru FC are yet to get off the mark.
The Malaysian giants are unbeaten across all competitions in the their last five games. Three big wins in the Malaysian Super League see them top the table, while they also dominated NS Matrix 4-1 in a Malaysia FA Cup match.
In AFC Cup action, Johor got off to a cracking start, putting eight goals past Myanmar’s Ayeyawady before defeating Bengaluru FC 1-0.
Johor also have the competition’s top goal scorer, Mohd Safiq Rahim, in the ranks, and the skipper has already netted four times in the two fixtures.
However, coach Mario Gomez certainly isn’t taking anything for granted heading into the match.
“Their team comprise national team players. We will not have it easy because they’ve also strengthened their team with four Japanese players,” he said.
He added: “I expect Lao Toyota to give us a hard time. Our fans will want to see us repeat the big win (8-1) against Myanmar’s Ayeyawady United, but it won’t be easy as Lao are also fighting for a place in the knockout round.”
Meanwhile, Laos Toyota were on a four-match winning streak until their 4-2 drubbing by Ayeyawady United last week.
However, their opening 2-1 win over India’s Bengaluru means they are still in the running for the next stage of the competition and the fact that they top the standing in Lao League is an indication of their calibre.
