Shanghai edge Gamba Osaka

Elkeson was the star for Shanghai SIPG as they defeated Gamba Osaka 2-1 in their Group G AFC Champions League clash at Shanghai Stadium on Tuesday.

The win for Shanghai moves them to the top of the group on six points, overtaking Melbourne Victory who drew with Suwon Bluewings earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Gamba Osaka remain on two points with just the two draws from their three fixtures.

The visitors started brightly, and Shanghai goalkeeper Yan Junling had to have his wits about him to deny Kim Jung-ya, saving his initial strike before fending off the follow-up with his head.

Gamba continued to hold their own in the first half, Takashi Usami forcing Yan into another save, but Shanghai would make the first breakthrough with just four minutes of the first half remaining.

A flighted free kick from Dario Conca wasn’t properly dealt with by the Gamba defence, allowing Asamoah Gyan to head the ball down for Elkeson, who slotted the ball into the net.

After the break, a Yu Hai header nearly put the hosts 2-0 up, but Gamba should have drawn level on 52 minutes through Usami, who failed to control his effort from the right of the Shanghai area.

Gamba did find the equaliser through Patric on the hour mark, however, the Brazilian heading home a cross that picked him out at the back post from a free kick.

But it took just two minutes for Shanghai to restore their lead, Elkeson again the hero for the home side as he scored with a header after latching on to a pinpoint cross from Conca.

Gamba went in search of an equaliser, while Shanghai also had their chances to extend their lead, but neither side could find another opening and the hosts hung on to collect all three points.
