Kitchee will meet with New Radiant at the Mongkok Stadium on Tuesday evening in a crucial Group F encounter.
Both sides lost their previous matches in the AFC Cup by a scoreline of 1-0. As a result, after two games Kitchee currently lie second in the group on three points while New Radiant are rooted to the foot of the group with only one point.
A victory for Kitchee would go a long way to securing a spot in the next phase of the competition.
“They have some big players and their defence is very tall so we need to take care of dead-ball situations,” said Kitchee caretaker coach Alex Chu.
“We should be quite confident as we are at home. We played very well in Singapore and we are confident we will win this match.”
Rufino Segovia del Burgo scored Kitchee’s only goal of their AFC Cup campaign and the veteran Spanish forward is always an exciting player to watch.
A defeat for New Radiant will all but spell the end of their campaign for this year. This would be a bitter pill for the Maldivian football club to swallow and a far cry from the glory of the heights they achieved in this competition in 2005 when they reached the semi-finals.
“We are a new team, but as we compete more we will have more momentum so we will try for the victory over Kitchee,” said New Radiant coach Yordan Stoykov. “It was a long trip back from the Philippines, so it will be testing for our players.”
Izzath Abdul Baree banged in New Radiant’s first goal of their AFC Cup campaign and he is always full of trickery. Stoykov will need a big performance from him if his side are to turn their fortunes around on Tuesday.
The game kicks-off at 20:00 HKT and is live on FOX Sports 2.
