Rovers win away at Selangor

A single goal made the difference as Singapore’s Tampines Rovers beat Selangor of Malaysia 1-0 in Tuesday’s Group E AFC Cup clash in Selayang.

With two wins from two matches so far, the Rovers now find themselves two points clear at the top of the group, while Selangor lie in third with just one point collected from their possible six.

The match started slowly, with neither side really taking control. An early long-range effort from Tampines midfielder Hafiz Sujad didn’t really trouble the goalkeeper, while at the other end, Patrick Wleh miscued a shot from inside the area.

The defining moment of the match arrived just after the half-hour mark, as Fazrul Nawaz scored the game’s only goal for Rovers.

Selangor defender Mohamad Bunyamin was the man who failed to clear at the back and a shot from Sujad succeeded in finding Nawaz, who fired home from close range.

Selangor tried their best to find a way back into the match in the second half, although without much success.

Wleh sent in a pass across the face of goal after an impressive run, but unfortunately for the home side, no one could get on the end of it.

They also had two opportunities to level via free kicks in the closing stages, but neither shot tested Izwan Mahbud in the Rovers goal and the visitors held on to collect all three points.
