Atletico Madrid cemented second place in La Liga as they recorded a 3-1 win over 10-man Valencia at the Mestalla on Sunday night.
Antoine Griezmann fired the visitors in front on 24 minutes, but Los Che responded swiftly with an equaliser from Denis Cheryshev four minutes later as the two teams went into the break at level pegging.
Fernando Torres would restore Atleti’s lead on 72 minutes, before the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Aderlan Santos was dismissed for picking up two yellow cards.
Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco then rubbed salts into their wounds with a third goal five minutes from time to take Diego Simeone’s men five points clear of city rivals Real Madrid in third position, as Valencia ended the weekend 10th in the table.
Earlier in the day, 10-man Real Betis continued their resurgence in the league with a 2-0 victory over Granada at Benito Villamarin lifting them to 11th place.
The hosts had a battle on their hands when Juan Vargas was dismissed on 53 minutes for two bookable offences, but two goals in the final five minutes from Alfred Ndiaye and Ruben Castro secured back-to-back wins for Juan Merino’s side to extend their unbeaten run to six games.
Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao kept their European challenge on track by beating La Liga strugglers Sporting Gijon 2-0 at El Molinon.
Goals either side of half-time from Benat (27′) and Oscar de Marcos (59′) secured a third straight win in the league for Los Leones, who moved up to sixth place, leaving Rojiblancos second from bottom, two points adrift of safety.
Meanwhile, rock-bottom Levante picked up a valuable point in their fight against relegation after holding Real Sociedad to a 1-1 draw at Anoeta.
The hosts got off to a flying start when Diego Reyes gave them the lead after 14 minutes, but Les Granotes hit back just 10 minutes through Deyverson to level matters.
Rubi’s side halted a two-match losing streak to move within five points of safety, while Sociedad moved up to ninth, despite going three games without a win.
