German football legend Ottmar Hitzfeld has backed his former side Bayern München to continue the dominance over league rivals BVB Dortmund ahead of Saturday’s Der Klassiker.
The two Bundesliga giants have had an outstanding 2016 campaign so far, with Bayern leading the way at the top of the Bundesliga table and Dortmund following in second place just five points behind.
However, the former Bayern mentor believes Dortmund still has a long way to go if they are to reach their counterparts’ level of performance, believing they will continue to be second best for the foreseeable future.
“I don’t know what position BVB Dortmund would finish in England, Italy or Spain. But here in Germany you have one of the best clubs in the world – Bayern Munich,” Hitzfeld said in an interview with Omnisport.
“They are on the same level as Real Madrid or Barcelona. There is a clear hierarchy in the Bundesliga. That won’t change in the next few years.
“At this time you can’t see VfL Wolfsburg or Gladbach or Leverkusen or Schalke 04 taking Dortmund’s place. There is no need to talk about Bayern, they are in a different dimension.
“Dortmund are the second force in Germany and have been over the past years. And I am sure that they will stay in this position for the next years.”
The Bavarians have won the last three consecutive Bundesliga titles after Dortmund won it two years in a row in 2011 and 2012.
