Leverkusen expect Roberto Hilbert to be sidelined for six weeks as he prepares to undergo surgery on a broken collarbone.
The 31-year-old right-back was forced off in the second half of Leverkusen's 4-1 defeat to Bremen on Wednesday after sustaining the injury in a challenge.
The Bundesliga club announced on Thursday that Hilbert will go under the knife, which will keep him out of action until mid-April.
"Bayer 04 Leverkusen defender Roberto Hilbert faces six weeks on the sidelines," read a statement from the North Rhine-Westphalia outfit.
"The right-back broke his right collarbone in a challenge during yesterday's Bundesliga fixture against Werder Bremen.
"Hilbert will undergo an operation today at the Mediapark Clinic in Cologne before starting his rehab at the Werkstatt at the BayArena."
