Inter Milan staged a stunning Coppa Italia semi-final comeback against Juventus, only to suffer the heartbreak of being eliminated on penalties.
Roberto Mancini’s side went into the second leg at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza 3-0 down from the first game, but two goals from Marcelo Brozovic and another courtesy of Ivan Perisic levelled the score at 3-3 on aggregate.
However, after neither side could force a winner in the remainder of the 90 minutes or extra time, Juventus scored each one of their penalties to punish Inter’s Rodrigo Palacio’s miss and claim a 5-3 shootout win.
Brozovic had taken advantage of some sloppy Juve possession on the edge of their own box to give the Nerazuzuri hope in the 16th minute, and when Perisic doubled their lead on the night with a cool back-post finish they appeared to be well on course to pull off an unlikely turnaround.
They had to wait until eight minutes from time to level the tie on aggregate, though, with Brozovic scoring his second from the penalty spot.
But it wasn’t to be. Extra time could not produce a winner and Massimiliano Allegri’s survived the drama to sneak into the final.
