Schalke 04 head coach Andre Breitenreiter has confirmed that Atsuto Uchida will not return to action at all this term due to a troublesome knee injury.
The Japan international, who is in his sixth year at the Veltins Arena, has been sidelined since undergoing knee surgery in pre-season.
However, Uchida is not expected to make his comeback in the next three months, according to Breitenreiter who revealed the 27-year-old right-back will continue his rehabilitation back in his homeland.
“It is important that he fully recovers. It is, unfortunately, a fact that he will no longer play a role in the second half of the season,” the German said.
Uchida has made 152 appearances in all competitions for the Gelsenkirchen club and became the first Japanese footballer to feature in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals when he lined up against Manchester United in 2011.
