BVB Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender hopes several of the club’s star players follow his lead and sign contracts to extend their stay at Signal Iduna Park.
Last week Bender signed a new deal that will see him remain a Dortmund player until 2021, and he subsequently called on the club to tie down more of their key players such as Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan and Marcel Schmelzer, whose current contracts all expire at the end of next season.
The midfielder was qualifying remarks he made immediately after signing his contract extension in which he implored his teammates to sign new deals of their own.
“We didn’t really discuss [my statement] in the dressing room,” he explained to Kicker. “I just wanted to say that we are a totally committed bunch of guys, and it’s a whole lot of fun. I hope that it was food for thought for one or two players to not give it up.
“I don’t want to pressure anyone, but I would personally be delighted if a few would opt for Borussia in the end.”
“Changes just for the sake of it don’t automatically make sense,” he added. “I appreciate what I have here. As long as I feel trust, I will stay here. The club just fits me. BVB is just like me, down-to-earth. And it stands for solid and clear work.”
