Gerard Moreno netted twice as Espanyol came from a goal down to secure a 4-2 win over Sporting Gijon at Estadio Municipal El Molinón on Saturday evening.
Carlos Castro scored in the 20th minute to put Gijon ahead, but the two sides went into the half-time break on level terms after Burgui fired hom an equaliser.
Moreno then netted twice in ten minutes to put Espanyol well ahead, but Castro converted his second of the game to set up a tense final half-an-hour.
Luis Hernandez then netted an unfortunate own goal with ten minutes remaining to hand all three points to Espanyol.
Elsewhere, Nolito continued his scoring exploits as he converted the only goal of the game in Celta Vigo‘s 1-0 win over Getafe at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.
Earlier, Atletico Madrid won the bragging rights with a 1-0 triumph over rivals Real Madrid, Antoine Griezmann netting the winner at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Over at Estadio Benito Villamarin, Manucho Goncalves netted a second-half brace to earn Rayo Vallecano a 2-2 draw with Real Betis, who had taken a two-goal lead thanks to Ruben Castro’s first-half double.
Meanwhile, Real Sociedad and Malaga walked away with one point apiece as their clash ended as a 1-1 draw.
Neither side were able to find the back of the net in the first half and it wasn’t until the 56th minute that Malaga broke the deadlock through striker Duje Cop.
Malaga looked as if they would emerge victorious and claim three points, but that was not to be the case as Sociedad forward Imanol Agirretxe scored the equaliser in the 81st minute.
Sociedad currently sit in ninth place on the La Liga standings, while Malaga are in 11th.
