Real Madrid burst out of the blocks in front of their home fans and almost had the lead inside the first minute after Cristiano Ronaldo created some space for himself on the edge of the area before flashing his shot just wide.

Nine minutes later, Atleti had their first chance of the game, but it failed to test Keylor Navas in the Real goal after Augusto Fernandez failed to get any power or direction on his shot.

Raphael Varane came within inches of giving the home side the lead as he burst into the box to get his head on the end of a free kick, but it flew agonisingly wide of the right-hand upright.

Griezmann forced a superb save out of Navas in the 41st minute as the visitors finished the first half strongly.

Much the same as the first half, Los Blancos were in the ascendancy at the beginning of the second period, but once again Ronaldo was unable to hit the target with an instinctive snap shot in the 48th minute.

However, it would be Atletico who would break the deadlock in the 53rd minute as Filipe Luis slid a wonderful ball in for Griezmann, who this time got the better of Navas with an accurate finish just inside the far post.

The home side responded strongly and immediately ask a number of questions of the Atleti defence with a series of crosses around the 60 minute mark, but balls from Isco, Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez were all rebuffed by a resolute Atleti.

Griezmann could have secured the points for his side in the 67th minute, but should have done better from close range and his weak shot was easily saved by Navas.

The home side squandered a fantastic chance late on as Jese thread an exquisite ball through for Danilo but the fullback hit his shot just wide of the Atletico goal in the 88th minute as the visitors hung on for a crucial 1-0 win to move four points clear of Real Madrid in La Liga standings.
