Van Gaal: De Gea should be fit for Arsenal clash

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said that he expects goalkeeper David de Gea to feature in the Red Devils’ Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday.

De Gea has been sidelined for United’s last three matches due to a knee injury he suffered while warming up for his side’s Europa League round of 32 first leg match against Midtjylland on February 18.

However, while Van Gaal was confident that De Gea will be back in action on Sunday, he was less optimistic about defender Chris Smalling, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, and striker Anthony Martial, who is nursing a hamstring injury.

“I expect [David can return] because I saw the way he was on Thursday,” he told reporters. “Chris is a question mark, but you never know. I don’t know [about Martial] because it has happened before the match. I have talked with him.

“I have talked with the physiotherapist that already had control of him. I cannot say, but it is not as heavy as everybody thinks.”

Even though 14 United players are currently injured, Van Gaal added that a lot of them are nearing full fitness, including Antonio Valencia and Marouane Fellaini.

“[Antonio] Valencia is also coming back and [Marouane] Fellaini too – in the month of March, a lot of players are coming back and then we have a strong selection again,” he said.

United will head into the match with Arsenal on a low as they were beaten 2-1 in their most recent Premier League game against Sunderland on February 13.

The Gunners on the other hand will go into the fixture on a high as they triumphed over league leaders Leicester City 2-1 on February 14.
