Vedad Ibisevic’s goal in the 43rd minute was enough to lead Hertha Berlin to a 1-0 win over 1. FC Köln on Friday night.
Hertha were on a five-game winless streak heading into the match and have now taken one step closer to securing a Champions League spot.
Köln had a chance to take the lead in the third minute, but defender Mergim Mavraj let the opportunity slip as his shot was off target.
Later on in the first half, Salomon Kalou and Ibisevic could have put Hertha ahead, but failed to do so. However, just on the stroke of half-time, Ibisevic broke the deadlock when he took advantage of some poor defending to slot the ball in to the back of the net.
Having taken the lead, Hertha denied Köln any opportunities to find an equaliser, but the hosts came so close to ending the match as a 1-1 draw as striker Anthony Modeste’s shot right at the death deflected off the post.
Hertha have now strengthened their hold on third place, while Köln currently sit in ninth place on the Bundesliga standings.
