Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Dortmund ahead on the night in the 23rd minute. Henrikh Mkhitaryan started the moving with a cross from the right flank that Marco Reus met at the far post with a volley at goal. Iker Casillas was only able to parry the shot across his goal, where Aubameyang hit it up against the crossbar and back down, where it deflected off the former Real Madrid stopper and into goal.

Dortmund were slightly fortunate to finish the first half without conceding, with Silvestre Varela forcing Roman Burki into a fine save with a bouncing header before the Swiss goalkeeper was sold short by Sven Bender, and needed to be quick to get to it before Vincent Aboubakar could pounce.

Aboubakar had Porto’s first good chance of the second period when Varela picked him out with a cross. He was right in front of goal but the ball in was slightly behind him, so he had to improvise with a back-heel, and Burki made the close-range save.

As the second half wore on a pattern was emerging: An increasingly frustrated Porto were pushing further forward as BVB managed to retain possession with relative ease, winding down the clock while knocking it about in midfield.

Mkhitaryan came close in the 79th minute after some good hold-up play from Adrian Ramos, who set the Armenian up to to roll it across goal and just wide of the post.

Porto had a great chance to finally make a breakthrough in the 87th minute, when Yacine Brahimi met a cross in the middle of the box and fired a first-time effort off the crossbar.
