Iraq’s Air Force club secured a 2-0 victory over Shabab Al-Dhahiriya of Palestine to make the perfect start to their 2016 AFC Cup campaign.
Hammadi Ahmed was the man who managed to find the target twice, scoring his side’s opener after just 12 minutes.
Iraq international Humam Tareq hit the crossbar with his shot, but Ahmed was on hand to head home the rebound.
The second arrived with just a few minutes remaining in the second half, Ahmed this time following up on a header from Osama Ali to strike from close range.
There were no further goals in the second half, despite some good pressure from the Iraqis, but they still secured all three points with ease.
Elsewhere in Group C, a last-minute strike from Mohammed Taqi gave Oman’s Al Orouba a 2-1 win over Al Wahda of Syria.
Abdulwasea Al Matari gave the Omanis the lead nine minutes into the second half, taking full advantage of a defensive error from the opposition, but Al Wahda responded with an equaliser late in the game, Raja Rafe heading home with only a couple of minutes left on the clock.
The Syrians looked to have salvaged a point, before Taqi latched on to Al Matari’s pass and scored the winning goal thanks to some help from the left post.
In Group D action, Syria’s Al Jaish secured a 1-0 win over Oman’s Fanja thanks to Yousef Kalfa long-range effort 12 minutes from time.
Also picking up three points in the group were Bahrain’s Muharraq, who beat Ahli Al Khalil from Palestine 2-1.
Fahad Showaiter put Muharraq in front after just five minutes, only for Jonathan Zorrilla to level the scores 10 minutes later.
But there was ample time for a winner, and it came inside the first half as well, Ismaeel Abdulatif scoring from the penalty spot after he was brought down inside the area.
